The amount of things that I know that I don't know is really, really big. But it doesn't approach the number of things I don't know that I don't know. In the last 2 months I added another thing to the list of known unknowns: electroplating steel.
My half-baked initial plan of stripping the nickel from the hardware and frame steel only to re-plate each part turned out to be a terrible idea. What I've learned since? You've got to do a lot of things before steel is ready to accept nickel plating.
An electroclean, an acid dip, a nickel strike and finally the nickel plating. I have yet to try this, but mid February looks like a very good spot to get stuck into the job. I can't wait to learn something new through another screw-up.
